Ardesia - Slate

§ Dopo un mese molto intenso , e non solo per i viaggi e le fiere , finalmente sono riuscita a lavorare alla Casa Rossa

§ After a very busy month , and not only because of the trips and fairs , at last I managed to work at the Casa Rossa

§ Una diecina di giorni fa sono arrivate le tegole d'ardesia per il cornicione.
Le ho trovate in Inghilterra presso il sito di Richard Stacey e sono PERFETTE ! pensare che sono tagliate a mano da vera ardesia e sono solo 1 mm di spessore !
§ Some 10 days ago the slates for the ledge arrived at my home.
I found them in England at Richard Stacey's website and they are PERFECT ! they are hand split from real slate and they are only 1 mm thick !

§ E pensare che sono la seconda scelta : su 300 pezzi ne ho trovati solo una dozzina meno che perfetti.
§ Think that they are second choice : among 300 pieces I found only a dozen less than flawless.

§ Il cornicione era così , nudo e triste
§ The ledge was like this , naked and sad

§ Dopo 3 ore di lavoro abbiamo completato 2 lati del cornicione
§ After 3 hours of work we completed 2 sides of the ledge

§ Mancano le finiture , gli angoli saranno protetti da lastre di ardesia messe perpendicolarmente e da coppi di terracotta
§ Finishing touches are still missing , the corners will be protected by slates perpendicular to thethe others and by earth roof tiles

§ Manca ancora lo stucco e la fila di tegoline sul mini cornicione sul retro
§ Grouting is still missing too with the teeny slates on the mini ledge on the back

§ Il colore della facciata cambia tantissimo con la luce ! non è così rosa ma neppure arancio come nella foto precedente
§ The facade colour changes so much with light ! it is neither as pink nor as orange as in the preceding picture

§ Mi piace da morire e non vedo l'ora di invecchiarlo per bene.
Sylvia, avrò bisogno del tuo aiuto !!!!
§ I like it to bits and I look forward to nicely age it.

§ Ecco il tetto nel suo colore definitivo ( mancano i comignoli , li farò domani ...se riesco a trovare un po' di tempo )
§ Here is the roof in its final colour ( still lacking the chimneys, I shall do the tomorrow ... if I can find a bit of time )

§ E questa è la facciata posteriore alla terza mano di colore.

§ And this the back wall at its third coat of colour.

Tetti di ardesia - Slate roofs

§ Credeteci o meno ma i tetti di Genova sono protetti dall' Unesco .

In effetti sono loro a donare l'aspetto tipico di Genova vista dall'alto : sembra un pesce, un grande Leviatano spiaggiato le cui squame rilucano debolmente al sole.

Donano il colore alla città , colore che varia a seconda ci sia sole o pioggia, maccaia o tramontana. 

Noi Genovesi amiamo i nostri tetti , li rispettiamo ed abbiamo cura di loro che ci proteggono da secoli dalle intemperie.

§ Believe it or not but Genoa roofs are protected by Unesco.
Actually they are the reason of the typical aspect of Genoa seen from above : it looks like a fish , a huge beached Leviathan whose scales faintly gleam under the sun.
They gift the city with their colour , hue which changes depending on the sun or rain, maccaia or north wind.
We, Genoese people, love our roofs , we respect them and we take care of them which have been sheltering  us for centuries.

§  Capite cosa intendo ? ora sembrano rosa .....
§ Do you see what I mean ? now they look pink ......

§  ...... e ora sono grigi e lucidi . Proprio come una bella acciuga .
§  ....... and now they are grey and shiny like  a nice anchovy .

§  Questa è la disposizione delle tegole usata a Genova ed in Liguria.
La ritroverete anche nella Casa Rossa appena arriveranno le tegoline d'ardesia che ho ordinato appositamente. Non vedo l'ora di cominciare :o)
§ This is the layout used in Genoa and Liguria.
You'll find it in the casa Rossa too as soon as the slates which I ordered will arrive. I cannot look forward to begin :o)

§ Un'ultima cosa : se queste foto vi sembrano strane non avete tutti i torti . Genova è forse l'unica città di cui si possono ammirare i tetti da un posteggio o da una strada .
L'unica costruita a strati come una torta nuziale , venite a controllare :o)))
§ One more thing : if these pics look somewhat strange you aren't that wrong . Genoa is may be the only city where you can admire roofs from a carpark or a traffic road.
The only one built up in layers like a nuptial cake , come and check yourselves :o)))

Cornicione e balconi - Ledge and balconies

 § Novità alla Casa Rossa che comincia sempre più ad assomigliare  ad una casa anzichè ad uno scatolone .
§ News at the Casa Rossa which begins to look like a house and not a huge cereal box.

 § Oggi abbiamo aggiunto i balconi che sono raddoppiati. In origine doveva essere uno solo  al secondo piano  ma l'insieme sembrava un po' misero ed allora abbiamo aggiunto quello al piano superiore sostituendo così la finestra del bagno dei ragazzi.
§ Today we added the balconies which doubled their number. Originaly it had to be only one at the second floor but it seemed a bit empty therefore we added the one at the top floor  replacing the window of the kids bathroom.

§  Abbiamo ricostruito l'aspetto dei balconi Genovesi con i loro ampi sostegni.
§ We recreated the aspect of the Genoese balconies with their broad braces.

§  Questo è il cornicione che ci ha fatto sudare le proverbiali sette camicie per fissarlo. Deve ancora essere stuccato ma promette bene.
§ This is the ledge which made us sweat blood over it to fix it in place. It still has to be plastered but it promises well.

§ Ecco come si presenta il tetto , ha un andamento zigzagante ma c'è un motivo ;o) 

La porzione più alta del muro sarà la parete del casotto che proteggerà l'arrivo delle scale e fungerà da ripostiglio per gli attrezzi.

§ And this is the roof , it has a zig zag profile but there is a reason ;o)

The tallest portion of the wall will be the back of the hut which will protect the landing of the stairs and it will serve as warehouse.

§  Ed ecco infine il retro ..... sembra una prigione ma vi garantisco che è identico all'originale.
Le finestre servono a dare luce alle scale e sono in scala con quelle vere.
§ Lastly the back .... it looks like a prison but I grant you that it's identical to the original.
The windows give light to the stairs and are in scale with the real ones.

§ Manca ancora la falda del tetto che collegherà il cornicione al muro ma, piano piano , ci arriveremo.
Per  ora sono a caccia di cartoni da uova per fare le tegole di ardesia .... pare sia impossibile trovarle ma ce la farò !
§ The roof pitch which will link the ledge to the roof is still missing but , slowly slowly , we'll get there.
Up to now I am hunting eggs cartons to make the slate tiles ..... seems impossible to find them but I shall succed !
